“Amazing Rock Formations”

The theme of the week for our Facebook posts.

Rock Formation of sedimentary rock in the Swakop River. You need to see this on video to appreciate the size
Soft Sedimentary rock formation in the Swakop River

The Swakopmund River cuts through the Namib desert. This ancient river exposes the mostly sedimentary rock layers in beautiful curves. This “badlands” is also called the Moon Landscape closer to Swakopmund where the river opens up somewhat. The river also runs through Welwitchia country. Driving up the river from Goanikontes these rock formations are a geologist’s dream.

rock formations at spitzkoppe
Granite, colored orange with oxidized iron at Spitzkoppen

Spitzkoppen is a magical place. As a fine example of a Inselberg, which dots the plains of the Namib Desert. The granite of Spitzkoppe contains high amounts of iron, which rusts and colors the mountain a beautiful brownish orange. Sunsets here are amazing, as are the stars above while you are camping.

Two distinct types of Rock at the Messum Crater

The Messum crater is a little further away from Walvis Bay which we call our home. This is where the biggest Welwitchia hang out. Notoriously tenacious survivors, these plants make this hyper-arid place their home. As you can see from the picture, the rock formations here are truly stunning!

Rock delaminating at Messum

Because there is so little water erosion at the Messum, you can see how rocks delaminate over the years. This is mainly heat causing the various elements that make up granite to expand at different rates, slowly breaking it apart.

Curious “Foamed” rock formation at Blutkoppe

Blutkoppe has this curious “Foamy” type of rock formation that is also present to a lesser extent at Brandberg and Vogelvederberg.

Awesome Inselberg of Spitzkoppe

Camping at Spitzkoppe allows you to see some amazing sunrises as well, and the cool desert air has to be experienced. The feeling of nature enveloping you is simply unbeatable. Except, of course in a good rain year, then it’s even more amazing!

The Volcanic shield of Brandberg.

Brandberg is a volcanic shield, long dormant. It is so massive that you need to be in space to see it all at once, or surfing around on Google Earth. The surrounding landscapes are truly, absolutely breath-taking. If you come to Namibia and miss out staying here, you have missed out!
