Hauchab Fontein and surroundings

When all the tourists are heading to Sossusvlei, there is a little known gem very close. Hauchab fountain is the source of the Tsauchab river which actually forms the gorges at Sesriem Canyon, right next to the Sesriem campsites which is the closest you can stay to Sossusvlei.

It is pretty, too.

Beautiful grassy fields in Hauchab
Yellow grass in the Hauchab surroundings

Hauchab is just a little bit less desert than the surroundings of Sossusvlei, and in some years have a significant amount of grass growing. Of course nothing good lasts long, and pretty soon the grass dries out and becomes yellow. This makes for some great scenic shots, especially when there are a few clouds adding texture to the sky.

The Hauchab Mountains
The mountains of the Hauchab region are quite textured

The mountains of the Hauchab area are beautifully textured, and in the early morning and late afternoon the light and shadows perform a dance of sheer beauty to any observer. The views from the campsites are quite amazing, the mountain above being just one example.

If you are extremely lucky, like we were when this photo was taken, there is some water in the gorges of the Tsauchab river. Why the rivers and mountain of the area have similar sounding names and different spellings you have to ask the locals. 🙂

At least, this is what I get from Wikipedia.

Camping here is a singularly relaxing experience, with beautiful stars, great views in the morning and night, and then day time naps after a play in the waters. Truly relaxing, especially for a desert soul.

In the rainy season the water runs on the surface at Hauchabfontein

Where the water runs on the surface, it spreads out and slows right down, making a safe place for little kids to play. Of course, anything can happen so you should still keep an eye out!

The many dark layers of rock are a geologist’s dream!

Learning about all sorts of rock layers during my day job of the time, it was a truly great experience to see the formations on the surface, as well as know the names the scientific community gave to all the bits. Of course, most of that information is long forgotten!

That’s it for the photographs for this week. As usual, each week has a theme to make it easier for me to pick photos and make the internet a prettier place. I have been working a bit on promoting Namibia as a tourist destination, and the video below is my first try:

There are quite a few things wrong with it still. We went off script a little as my camerawoman did not like the dune driving experience and refused to film further. 🙁

Now I am re-visiting the idea, maybe this time sitting at a camp fire in the desert somewhere, and telling the world about how nice Namibia is, and all the reasons to come visit!

Now, I just need 80 more words for the Search Engine Optimizations to score this page highly, and hopefully that means that more people will see it on the internet. Hopefully someone looking for both Tsauchab or Hauchab will get to see it, and then read all about this wonderful little company.

It’s almost like cheating, but not quite, as supposedly when something is written for humans by humans without being too salesy, then the search engine will rank it higher, as it is supposedly “better” content.

Well, there you go. Only one week behind on the blogs now!
