Swakopmund in focus

Swakopmund is the name of the German settlement where the Swakop river meets the sea. “Mund” is German for mouth, and “Swakoub” is an old indigenous word roughly translated as “Excrement” or “Diarrhea” which pretty accurately describes the look of the water of the Swakop river when it flows, as it brings mud and twigs down to the coast.

Life was never easy in the early 1900’s during the start of this settlement, but with lots of support from Germany some pretty impressive feats of engineering was accomplished in Swakopmund, and the old part of town is both pretty and rich in historical artifacts. The style of architecture is much like Bavaria
